Words on our t-shirts speak volumes about who we are and what we believe. I’m all for a little shock value, and even a good joke, depending on the situation, but what doesn’t make sense to me is the way in which young women are willing to degrade themselves by wearing nasty slogans on their shirts. Hoping to be able to offer a fabulous alternative, I set out to create great looking women’s t-shirts, with a combination of compelling art and positive, inspiring words, without sacrificing great style or being so sugary sweet your teeth ache.
My design inspiration is constantly changing and evolving. Some styles are distinctively tattoo inspired while others take their inspiration from classic Greek and Roman art and architecture. Still others have a little Gothic or Asian essence to them. And, because I don't take myself too seriously, some are slightly irreverent. What I am not, and will never be is sweet or cute. It's just not my thing.
I launched Mizaru after receiving an overwhelmingly positive response to the first line, PTnK, Peace, Tolerance n Kindness. What I really wanted to convey was the idea that we don’t need to have nasty, smutty, vulgar messages on our shirts. To me, this translated to “See No Evil.” And what better way to suggest this than to use the actual Japanese name of the See No Evil monkey: Mizaru. Women should shine with integrity and a certain humanity without being preachy or sugar-sweet. I hope you agree that it is a worthy goal.
Be well and be kind,
Tracey
